General overview of OSTU

Omsk State Transport University (OSTU) is one of the oldest educational institutions in Siberia. The fact of its establishment is connected to the beginning of the great Trans-Siberian Railway construction which created the need in qualified railway transportation specialists.

The University’s history started in the nineties of the 19th-century. It was in 1896 when Tomsk Technologic Institute (TTI) was established by the decree of the Emperor Nicholas II. There in 1900 the training of locomotive and car engineers began.

In 1961 the institute was moved to Omsk and in 1997 it acquired the university status.

Present day OSTU is a multi-discipline institute of higher education providing training in a wide range of higher professional education syllabuses: engineering, industrial production, transport and communication, economics, management and others with 4-year for bachelor’s degree, 5-year — for specialists, 6-year — for master’s degree.

High quality theoretical schooling and professional training of our graduates is provided by qualified faculty members, material resources, favorable conditions for students dwelling, nutrition, sports and recreation as well as scientific researches for production and transport enterprises conducted at the University. The University quality management system is ISO 9001-2001 certified in GOST R as well as in EVROCERT, ÖQS, IQNet. The University library (800.000 copies) is the methodical center of Omsk universities libraries. The library has the electronic catalog and uses up-to-date information technologies.

The University is the leading academic-scientific-industrial complex with sophisticated experimental and pilot production facilities where concrete practical challenges of railway transport are met.

The major scientific challenges of the University researchers are the rolling stock efficiency and reliability increase, rolling stock units and components restoration and repair enhancement, railway traffic safety increase, energy and resource-saving technologies and equipment, electric railways power supply systems improvement, effective automation, telemechanics and communication devices maintenance and diagnostic technologies development.

Undergraduates and post-graduates from Germany, Czech Republic, North Korea, China, Mongolia first study Russian languages at preliminary courses, and then continue further training according to selected specialties.

The individual and group study of Russian language for foreigners is provided during the academic year.

The University maintains contacts with railway and technical universities of Europe, North America and South-East Asia.

The establishment and development of the international connections of OSTU became possible due to its participation in international EU TEMPUS projects in collaboration with Moscow State Railway University, Tomsk State University, the Urals and Samara State Railway Universities on the one hand and Austrian, the UK, German, Spanish and Swedish universities on the other from 1994 to 2009.

The fulfillment of these projects resulted in joint educational programs in the field of marketing, management and economy, introduction of new informational technologies into the University library work, establishment of Infotheque — the center for international cooperation, creation and publication of financial support manual dedicated to students, postgraduates and researchers exchange among Russian and EU educational institutions, training of advisors in the field of international cooperation, professional development of foreign languages teachers in Germany and Great Britain.

The events that contribute to the University training quality are the teachers internships at railway transport enterprises, at research institutions and universities of Austria, Australia, Germany, Great Britain, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Denmark, the USA, Sweden; student groups exchange with railway universities of Austria and Germany, affiliate training in the USA, reception of delegations, leaders and specialists from foreign universities and enterprises, students participation in Work&Travel and Internship programs in the USA.

OSTU representatives are the members of the Association of Technical Universities International Departments Heads in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (ÀÌÎ). Their participation in AMO annual conferences as well as their regular contacts with counterparts responsible for international cooperation at the universities-members of AMO provide the opportunity to conduct these activities at the university level with more efficiency.

In October 2002 OSTU hosted the first conference of Austrian, Russian and Korean postgraduates dedicated to transport problems. Russian-German student seminar on actual issues of transport ecology was held in March 2004. In September 2006 OSTU held the seminar «Russia as a Link in Eurasian Traffic» with the participation of students from Germany, Czech Republic and Russia.

In September 2008 the International seminar was held concerning the problems of Railway transport in Russia and Germany with participation of German students and Russian postgraduates.

The organization of OSTU student educational practical work abroad has been worked out well. 20-30 OSTU students are sent to the universities and railway enterprises of Austria, Czech Republic and Germany on annual basis with the same number of foreign students coming to Omsk.
