A new program “Information Security of Telecommunication Systems” was launched in 2004 at the Department “Information Transmission Systems”. The department was renamed “Information and communication systems and information security” as a result of upsizing in 2013. At this time the department provides training in the field of information security already in three programs:
- Information security of telecommunication systems;
- Information security of automated systems;
- Information-analytical security systems.
In 2016 it was decided to set up a department “Information security” for training students in the above mentioned programs. An Associate Professor, Candidate of Technical Sciences Alexander Shiler was appointed a Head of the Department.
The main aim of the department staff today is training specialists in the field of information security and analytical systems for large companies and government agencies.
Today we can see a rapid increase of interest for information security problems in the context of active development of distributed information systems both in Russia and abroad. The main threat to such systems comes from themselves: hardware and software failures, software errors, intentional sabotage or unintentional erroneous actions of users and administrators. In recent years it became understood that the most dangerous IT security threat is internal intruders. The problem of leakage of confidential data came out on top in the list of damages to companies in different countries and is characterized by financial losses of about $1 trn.
The Department “Information Security” of Omsk State Transport University carries out research work aimed at ensuring information security of organizational management systems.
The main objectives of this work are increasing effectiveness of the protecting information resources methods, assessment of losses caused by hacking protection systems and the possibility of unauthorized access to objects of protection. Much attention is paid to the development of methods used for restoring information arrays in automated control systems, etc. This caters to the needs of the companies JSC “Russian Railways”, PJSC “Gazprom Neft”, “Rostelecom” group and the financial sector of Russia.
One of the ways to improve the quality of the educational process and training specialists is attracting students to research work throughout the entire period of study.
The department holds the following events, during which the results of the work are presented and discussed:
- conferences following the results of the internships;
- calls for proposals for the best diploma thesis in different courses;
- various creativity competitions.
The department has extensive laboratory facilities for information security and includes the following laboratories:
- “Technical information protection”;
- “Software and hardware for information security”;
- “Security of computer networks, operating systems, database systems”;
- “Information and analytical activity”;
- “Modeling, design and operation of information and analytical systems”.
Students study methods and devices for protecting information in main and local telecommunication networks.
Over the past decades the change of technologies in the field of informatization is taking place more rapidly than in any other area of human activity. For this reason the development of the educational and laboratory facilities is aimed at obtaining instruments and equipment necessary for training specialists aware of modern information technologies as well as technologies protecting information from unauthorized access.
