On July 15, the Omsk city council decided by a majority vote to award the title of «Honorary citizen Omsk» to Ilham Islamovich Galiev, the President of Omsk State Transport University.


Under the leadership of Ilham Islamovich Galiev the University building was restored, which is a monument of cultural heritage of Federal significance in accordance with the decree of the RSFSR Council of Ministers from 04.12.1974 No. 624. Besides, there was a massive upgrade to the teaching and laboratory facilities. Under his leadership, the university has built two academic buildings (No. 4 and the medical school building), a student training center, a 150-seat student dormitory No. 8, and a unique testing ground for operating railway equipment. Four doctorates and 25 candidates of sciences have graduated. Ilham Islamovich is the author of more than 400 scientific and methodological works, — Vice-mayor Oleg Zaremba has presented the candidate for the title of an honorary citizen.

Ilham Islamovich Galiev is the President of Omsk State Transport University, Chairman of the dissertation Council, Professor of the Department «Theoretical and applied mechanics», doctor of technical Sciences, Professor, honorary worker of science and technology of the Russian Federation, honorary worker of transport of the Russian Federation, honorary railway worker, member of the Russian Academy of transport and the Russian Academy of engineering.

In 1964, he graduated with honors from the Omsk Institute of railway engineers. From 1964 to 1967, he worked at the Ermentau station locomotive depot in the Tselinograd region. Since 1967, he has been a postgraduate student, lecturer, associate Professor, head of the Department of «Theoretical mechanics» at the Omsk Institute of railway transport engineers. In 1986, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Leningrad Institute of railway transport engineers. From 1986 to 1988 he was a Vice-rector for research. He directed postgraduate studies, research on the topic «Improving the dynamic and traction qualities of rolling stock». From 1988 to 1999 he was the first Vice-rector for academic affairs. From 2000 to 2010 – rector of Omsk State Transport University. Since February 2010 — the President of OSTU.

Ilham Islamovich is a well-known expert and scientist in the field of vehicle dynamics, human and rolling stock vibration protection. He was awarded the order of Honor, badges «For excellent work in railway transport. 30 years», «For excellent work in railway transport. 40 years», the highest award of the West Siberian railway — the sign «For work and dedication».

The title «Honorary citizen of Omsk» is the highest honorary title of the city of Omsk and it is awarded for personal services to protect the rights and legitimate interests of the city’s residents, as well as for preservation of historical and cultural heritage of the city. Reasons to award the title also include the presence of state awards (orders and medals), honorary titles of the USSR, RSFSR or the Russian Federation, awards and honorary titles established by ministries and departments of the Russian Federation.

In different years, the title «Honorary citizen of Omsk» was also awarded to Alexey Nikolaevich Liberov (People's Artist of the RSFSR, laureate of the State Prize of the RSFSR named after Repin, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts), Alexander Ivanovich Novikov (President of Omsk State Medical University, Honored doctor of Russia), Valery Ivanovich Alekseev (drama artist, People's artist of the Russian Federation).

We wholeheartedly congratulate Ilham Islamovich and sincerely wish him good health, inexhaustible energy and fruitful longevity for the prosperity of our University and the city of Omsk.


OSTU has extensive experience in cooperation with Chinese universities in the field of education and since 2018 has been actively involved in work with three Chinese universities on joint educational programs. This year the university is expanding cooperation by signing an agreement with another university.


On April 27 the work of the section "Electric Railways Rolling Stock" of the VIII All-Russian Student Scientific Conference with International Participation "Student: Science, Profession, Life" started within the student scientific forum “Dorogu Molodym” (Make way for the Youth).


The Russian Foundation for basic research has summed up the results of the competition for the best basic research projects carried out by young scientists studying in postgraduate education. A total of 1,540 participants were supported, including Maria Kuznetsova, a postgraduate student at the Department of electric railways rolling stock at Omsk State Transport University (her research supervisor – doctor of technical sciences, Professor Vasily Cheremisin).


The independent news agency "Interfax" has published a national ranking of universities in 2020. According to the data obtained, Omsk State Transport University ranks 150th (out of 337 universities in Russia). Among the nine railway universities in the country, OSTU is in fourth place, behind Russian University of Transport (MIIT), Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University (PGUPS) and Rostov State Transport University (RSTU).


OSTU started issuing diplomas to graduates of 2020. This year's celebrations have been adjusted due to the pandemic. The diplomas were delivered according to a schedule, with the necessary safety measures.
