The department was formed in OSTU (OmIIT) on the basis of a special resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in 1964, and from that time began training specialists in the educational program 0606 “Automation and Telemechanics”.
This educational program was established with the support from famous scientists: P.A. Azbukin, R.A. Voronov and, of course, rector A.A. Seregin.
The department was named "Industrial Electronics and Automation", which corresponded to the main educational and scientific activities of the department.
The associate professor T.T. Tsukanov was the first head of the department. After him, one of the young candidates of sciences at that time, associate professor M.V. Kurovsky was the head of the department for the longest time and most successfully. The department employees R.A. Akhmedzhanov, A.T. Kogut, A.B. Kildibekov and S.N. Chizhma played a large role in the further development of the department.
The former employees significantly influenced the formation and development of the department: V.T. Zharkov, G.K. Khaustova, V.G. Logachev, A.T. Kogut, A.V. Sysolyatin, A.Ya. Faronov, E.I. Vinogradov, Yu.V. Chistyakov, M.Ya. Zakharenko, N.I. Zerenkov, G.F. Yakovlev and many others.
Over the years, more than 2.5 thousand highly qualified specialists have graduated from the department. They work in many areas of industry and transport. There are famous scientists among our graduates, as well as doctors and candidates of sciences, successful entrepreneurs, public figures and artists.
The department has extensive professional and creative ties with other universities, and not only the railway profile. Teachers of the department are recognized scientists in Russia.
One of the areas of scientific work of the department is to increase the efficiency of methods and algorithms for the transfer, processing of information and control in automated systems of railway transport and industry. In this area, in 2000–2016, two thesis for the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences were prepared and defended (Kogut A.T., 2010, Chizhma S.N., 2014) and 13 dissertations for the degree of candidate technical sciences.
